The highlights (a personal view) of the 31st edition of the GEWEX Scientific Steering Group meeting included:

  • Presentation and vision of the WCRP strategy and the WCRP review by Pavel Kabat (WMO Chief Scientist) and Detlef Stammer (WCRP-JSC-Leadership).
  • Presentation of the SSG agenda by Peter van Oevelen (IGPO-Leadership) and Co-Chairs Graeme Stephens and Jan Polcher (GEWEX SSG-Leadership)
  • Review of the Earth Observations programmes (Europe's ESA/EUMETSAT, USA NASA/NOAA, Japan's JAXA space agencies representatives).
  • Presentations and Discussions of the GEWEX Panels achievements and plans in GDAP, GASS, GLASS, GHP and links with WMO panels (e.g. WWRP, WGNE, GCOS, GAW, ...).
  • Presentations and Discussions on the strategic partnerships between GEWEX and other ongoing efforts (FutureEarth, CLIVAR, CLiC, SPARC, High Mountain Summit, ...).
  • Presentations of new SSG members Prof. Christian Jacob (Monash University) and Prof. Bob Su (University of Twente).
  • Discussions on the importance of cross-connecting activities to mitigate stove-piping, and foster young scientists involvement.
  • Discussions on a new GEWEX Science and Application Traceability Matrix (SATM) to structure GEWEX actions, objectives (living document).
