Definition

The soil heat flux is the energy receive by the soil to heat it per unit of surface and time.

The Soil heat flux is positive when the soil receives energy (warms) and negative when the soil loses energy (cools).

  1. In GRIB-API we have defined "Heat flux" with paramId 260198 (Discipline 2, Category 0(vegetation/biomass), Number 24(heat flux))

    To ask WMO for new parameter "soil heat flux" under Discipline 2, Category 3(soil product) would be probably more appropriate.

  2. Is it correct that this soil heat flux will be only for the surface? For example heat exchange between soil and atmosphere, we don' t provide heat flux between various soil levels.
