Probably yes up to daily scale … not so sure for hourly.

  1. Several RCMs in EURO-CORDEX provide output for maximum hourly precipitation rate. Is it not recommended then to use from the data base?

  2. Erik Kjellström provided a feedback to this question:

Climate models at high resolution of the order 10 km like the EURO-CORDEX RCMs are better at representing many features of precipitation statistics compared to coarser models. This includes also extreme precipitation. However, as convective clouds are still not resolved even at this resolution heavy downpours not represented in a good way. For example, the diurnal cycle of precipitation is often shifted (too early) and the maximum intensities of precipitation are generally too low. Maximum hourly precipitation rate associated with large-scale synoptic disturbances including frontal systems, however, are generally better represented. Therefore maximum hourly precipitation can be used. But, it should be carefully considered for what purpose and a proper evaluation should always be done.
